The Glory of the Borodino Battle. La gloire de la bataille de Borodino

The Glory of the Borodino Battle tour highlights the history of the Patriotic War of 1812 (known in the West as the Russian Campaign of Napoleon), its historical background, heroes and main military events.

The principal exhibit of our museum is the Borodino panorama, one of the world’s largest of its genre. It depicts the decisive battle between Napoleon’s Grande Armée and the Russian army, which took place near the Borodino village on September 7, 1812, the bloodiest battle of its time. The circular painting (115 meters in length and 15 meters in height) was created by notable Russian artist Franz Roubaud to commemorate the centennial of the battle in 1912. The panorama’s foreground, representing the terrain and ruins of the Semyonovskoe village along with special lighting create a complete illusion of the event.

Our museum presents a rich collection of pieces from the Napoleonic era including battle paintings, engravings, crafts, weapons, uniforms and military equipment as well as various everyday items of the Russian and French armies.

This guided tour is addressed to an English-speaking audience, but it can be also useful for all kinds of students who study English and those interested in History.

If you study English and are intrigued by our past, you should consider taking this tour. The narrative of the events of the Patriotic war of 1812 will increase your cultural awareness. It’s a common misperception that studying history simply involves remembering people, events, key dates, and places, etc. The “who, what, when and where” types of questions are just the start of it. We are far more interested in exploring the «how and why» questions – that is, interpreting events to better understand how they unfolded and why they occurred. We invite you to journey back in time to the early XIX century.
